Roulette - An Introduction
Roulette is probably the best known of the casino games. Fortunes have been made and lost at Monte Carlo where the bank was broken on several occasions. The incident of the man who broke the bank at Monte Carlo is a true story.
The Layout
The "layout" is the table design on which the players place their money. Although there are several different designs of layouts, they are essentially all the same. The player may put his money almost anywhere on the layout, in a square, on a line, on the intersection of two lines, or in a rectangle. There are sixteen different combinations of playing, and many of these sixteen can be played in several distinct ways.
On a US Roulette wheel there are thirty-eight different numbers on the layout, ordered from 1 to 36 and the 0 and 00. The last two are called "zero," and "double zero." These two numbers will be found in the layout in the tops of the columns of numbers. All of the even numbers from 1 to 36 are black and the odd numbers are red. The zero and double zero are green. For each number on the layout (0 and 00 included), there is a corresponding number on the roulette wheel; and the colours of the numbers on the layout and wheel also correspond. Players in Europe get a much better. There is only a single zero, no double zero to increase the house percentage.
The Wheel
The roulette wheel contains thirty-eight pockets, 36 numbers and 0 and 00, (37 pockets on a European wheel). A small ball is whirled around the rim by a banker, and when it comes to rest in one of the pockets the banker usually announces the winning number and colour, and makes the pay-offs accordingly.
