Roddick, Davydenko upset in Toronto (AP)
Andy Roddick followed Roger Federer out of the Rogers Cup. The sixth-seeded Roddick was upset by 44th-ranked Marin Cilic 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 Thursday and was later joined on the sidelines by fellow seeded players Nikolay Davydenko and David Ferrer, who were also eliminated. "His aggressiveness is what won him that match," Roddick said of Cilic.
Jankovic serves her way to easy win (AP)
Jelena Jankovic rode her improved serve to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Melinda Czink of Hungary in the East West Bank Classic on Thursday, keeping the top-seeded Serb on course to take over the No. 1 ranking. Jankovic served seven aces in knocking out "lucky loser" Czink, who lost in the second round of qualifying but got into the main draw when Svetlana Kuznetsova withdrew with an injured right knee.
Kournikova, Gimelstob won't meet in DC (AP)
Anna Kournikova doesn't care about Justin Gimelstob or what he thinks about her. Injured Golovin pulls out of Rogers Cup (AP)
Tatiana Golovin has pulled out of next week's Rogers Cup event in Montreal, Tennis Canada announced Wednesday. Golovin, ranked 24th in the world, injured her back at a tournament in Germany in May and has been kept off the court. "I regret that I will not be able to take part in the Rogers Cup next week in Montreal.," the 20-year-old Frenchwoman said.
Goerges upsets Srebotnik again (AP)
Julia Goerges upset second-seeded Katarina Srebotnik for the second time in less than a month, winning 6-4, 6-2 on Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the Slovenia Open. The 19-year-old German, ranked 99th on the WTA Tour but who reached the quarterfinals at Memphis is March, also upset the Slovenian in the first round at Wimbledon.
Serena out of tourney with knee injury (AP)
Serena Williams' injured left knee has knocked her out of another tournament less than three weeks before the Beijing Olympics. An 8-year-old girl was ejected from a junior tennis tournament on New Zealand's South Island when officials discovered she was wearing a radio earpiece to receive instructions from her father. Tournament referee Rob Wilkinson said officials became suspicious because the match involving Ukranian-born Anastasiya Korzh featured a "heightened number of questioned calls."
